European PropTech Association Joins the 50L Home Coalition

As water scarcity and climate change continue to challenge the way we design and manage our homes, a global movement is redefining what sustainable living can look like.

The 50L Home Coalition envisions a future where each person can live comfortably on just 50 liters of water per day—without compromising on convenience or quality of life. This transformative idea is not only about saving water, but also about reducing the energy and carbon emissions associated with its use.

At its core, 50L Home is a global, multi-stakeholder initiative coordinated by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD) and the World Economic Forum (WEF).

The Coalition unites companies, policymakers, researchers, and civil society organizations to co-develop and scale innovations that make urban water use more efficient, circular, and resilient.

By connecting efforts across technology, design, and policy, 50L Home seeks to make low-carbon, water-smart lifestyles accessible to all.

The 50L Home vision is bold yet practical: transforming homes and cities so that 50 liters of daily water use per person feels like 500 liters, thanks to smarter systems, better design, and behavioral change.

Through pilot projects in Los Angeles and London, the Coalition has already demonstrated the impact of this approach—reducing indoor water consumption by over 20% while increasing resident satisfaction. These pilots have shown that sustainability can go hand-in-hand with comfort and delight.

50L Home focuses on four key pillars

  • Innovation: Advancing technologies and solutions that reduce, recycle, and reuse water in and around the home.

  • Implementation: Partnering with local actors to test scalable solutions in water-stressed cities.

  • Education: Inspiring behavioral shifts that redefine our relationship with water.

  • Advocacy: Influencing policy and regulatory frameworks to support long-term, systemic change.

Welcoming the European PropTech Association

Dirk Paelinck European PropTech Association

The European PropTech Association has now joined the 50L Home Coalition as its newest partner—marking an exciting step in extending the Coalition’s reach and impact across Europe. The European PropTech Association mission is to support sustainable technology that improves and revolutionizes real estate development and management across European markets and beyond.

A Catalyst for Sustainable Real Estate Innovation

By joining the Coalition, the European PropTech Association brings invaluable expertise from the intersection of technology, property, and sustainability—helping connect innovators, startups, corporates, and investors who are driving digital transformation within the built environment.

Their involvement will help scale the lessons learned from the Coalition’s Los Angeles and London pilots to a broader European context, supporting cities and developers to integrate water- and energy-efficient systems into the next generation of buildings.

Scaling Innovation Across Continents

This collaboration comes at a crucial moment. As “Day Zero” scenarios loom closer for many cities—when water supplies could effectively run dry—the need for cross-sector action has never been more urgent.

Nearly a quarter of the global population already faces high water stress. Just take a look at the US as an example, where household water use accounts for around 18% of total home energy consumption, directly contributing to greenhouse gas emissions.

Through the partnership with the European PropTech Association, 50L Home aims to accelerate innovation in sustainable housing, influencing design standards, investment strategies, and consumer awareness across Europe.

Together, both organizations will work to promote circular water systems, reduce energy demand, and support urban resilience in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring access to clean water and sanitation for all.

A Shared Commitment to a Sustainable Future

As the 50L Home Coalition continues to expand its network of partners and projects, its mission remains clear: to make water-efficient living aspirational, achievable, and scalable.

The addition of the European PropTech Association strengthens this mission—uniting the real estate innovation community with a global coalition of leaders committed to a more sustainable, water-secure future.

With Phase 3 of the Los Angeles pilot concluding this fall and new initiatives emerging across Europe, the next chapter of 50L Home promises groundbreaking progress toward water-positive, low-carbon living.
